in 1979 most can’s, amon düül’s, xhol’s and ash ra tempel’s were long dead as were most hippies and german punk had just begun to establish itself as the next big thing. so was the ndw (=german new wave) which actually refers to a load of houswife-radio compatible pop-bands having success in the national top-ten. but in some damp cellar-rooms a new bunch of fritzonesians was breeding. luxus was one of them, an unknown american called eric mitchell and two germans, christine hahn and martin kippenberger, recorded four songs in new york city in ‘79 to be released on west-berlin’s so 36 records (named after a famous club). luxus did just this 4-track-double 7″, wich nowadays is one of the rarest german “new wave”-records. both 7″s came in separate sleeves and were sold as a set. so don’t be fooled by someone offering just one luxus-7″, it’s not complete! also, in ‘82 an album by another band of the same name was put out on “neue welt schallplatten” which has nothing to do with our trio here, just plain 80’s -new wave-rock. the luxus-double-7″ obviously never sold very well and when the so 36-club closed down the first time in 1981, the band would give their record to the people in the audience for free! christine hahn had been in malaria/mania d. and kept recording with other berlin musicians like klaus krüger whom she assisted on vocals and synth for his two albums on klaus schulze’s innovative communication-label, which are both recommended 80’s krautspace saucers. martin kippenberger became quite famous as an artist working on sculptural and installational objects with regular exhibitions everywhere.

Hello, Thanks for the information on the Luxus record - I’ve been looking for a copy for over 25 years. Do you have any hints on where I can find one? Thanks, Tom
